You’ve planned the honeymoon or destination wedding of your dreams, and now the question is do I need travel insurance? The first thought is often, there’s no way I’d cancel this trip, so is travel insurance worth it?
Easy. Travel insurance provides protection and peace of mind from more than just cancellations. It also protects you from other unexpected things like medical emergencies, lost or damaged baggage, and travel delays.
My rule of thumb is that if you can’t afford to lose it, then you should protect it. That goes for your travel investment, your possessions, and most importantly, yourself! As someone who is living proof that the saying “if it can happen, it will happen” is true, I never travel without some form of travel insurance policy and here’s why…
Medical
Nobody expects to get sick, break a bone, or even something more serious to happen while you’re away but, things like this do occur, and often. Since majority of insurance policies do not cover international travel, and even with domestic travel you’ll likely be considered “out-of-network”, a travel insurance policy with medical coverage is important. And if you plan on zipling, horseback riding, or any other “adventurous” activities I’d strongly recommend reading the policies to ensure these activities are not excluded!
Delays & Interruptions
In 2012 over 14% of flights were delayed and over 7,000 flights cancelled, that leaves a lot to chance when you’re depending on air travel. Air carriers don’t guarantee your arrival times, nor are they required to compensate you for any expenses incurred by travel delays and cancellations. So, if you can’t afford to play the odds travel insurance can offer valuable protection here.
Baggage Protection
Do you plan on packing lots of designer clothes? What about important medications or expensive camera equipment? What if your luggage is lost or damaged? Yes, your airline will provide you with a reimbursement if your luggage is lost or damaged but, it can take upwards of 3 months to get your claim settled, and some carriers only offer future travel vouchers rather than cash. Most travel insurance policies provides coverage so that you can replace needed items right away, and will reimburse your lost luggage at a much higher rate than an airline.
Bottom line, travel insurance protects you against the unexpected while on your honeymoon or destination wedding trip, giving you peace of mind. And not all travel insurance policies are created equal, so be sure to find the one that fits your needs!
